Former MLB Commissioner Fay Vincent is well-respected around baseball, known as a man who speaks his mind whether or not his opinion is popular. In a May 22nd radio interview with ESPN Radio 760 (West Palm Beach, FL), Vincent said what is obvious -- if current Commissioner Bud Selig does not attend the game where Barry passes Aaron, it would show Selig thinks Barry used performance-enhancing drugs. Vincent continued, "I believe that there's a major question. I believe there are lots of answers that we need. I believe that there is certainly evidence. Is it conclusive? Has he admitted anything? You know it's a little bit like Pete Rose. The evidence that Pete Rose bet on baseball was enormous; Pete denied it. And people all over this country said, 'Well, you know it's not great evidence, we really don't know, we'd give Pete the benefit of the doubt.' The whole thing is silly -- Pete Rose bet on baseball. I think Barry Bonds took steroids. Enough's enough." Remember that it was Commissioner Vincent, all the way back in 1991, sent a letter to all clubs saying that any players using, selling or possessing illegal drugs and steroids would be subject to discipline. However, it is thought that the Players' Union would have won a challenge to any penalty because of the legal complications. But at least Vincent attempted to address the problem. Selig, however, has looked the other way as the Steroid Era has unfolded under his watch. That he is still Commissioner of Baseball is another affront to real fans everywhere.
